Ka-Na-Chi-Hih went to Thailand
Staff member, Derek Sanderson took his skills and knowledge about solvent abuse, to help Aboriginals with solvent abuse problems in Thailand.
The Little Black River band member and Thunder Bay resident was asked by his employers to participate in an eight-day partnership exchange between Nishnawbe Aski Nation and Drug and Alcohol Recovery and Education Network (DARE). Sanderson visited the Thai-Burma border and shared his knowledge of treatment. He gained insight from DARE staff whose mandate is strengthening communities and changing attitudes and beliefs through education.
DARE also seeks to create a cohesive and widespread accessible challenge to addiction throughout all the ethnic communities.
Sanderson and his group worked in refugee camps. He was glad to have had the oppurtunity to learn about another Indigenous culture.
“What we try to do in all cases is give people the knowledge to help overcome addiction. We want to guide them through addiction recovery.”
